Short Story Ideas

1. A night spent with someone that will be leaving the next day
2. Running into an ex while with your new boyfriend/girlfriend
3. What it's like going to grandma's house as a little kid
4. The passing of someone close to you as a child, from a child's perspective

  1. Heather, I love all of these ideas. I like that you have some uplifting ideas (1 and 3) and some sad ones (1 and 4.) All of these ideas have the potential to be great stories. I personally really like the first idea. It something that you can twist two ways. You can go through a story of someone you love or like that is leaving the next day, as well as someone you despise leaving and telling them what you really think about them! All of these options are incredible! The only thing I would make sure to watch is the character development, make sure that the reader can relate to the character and what is happening. Even if we can not relate at least have an image of the person and the situation they are in. Great ideas! I can't wait to see what you come up with!

  2. I like number three the most, but only if you wrote it from the deceased's perspective. I think it would be really interesting to see him/her looking down upon his living friend or reliving the scene and feeling sorry that he left his friend behind. You could still tell the surviving child's story, just from the perspective of the deceased. I think you could provide a sort of omniscient 3rd person POV with that but still have the personal intimate touch of a 1st person POV.

  3. Heather I really like the idea of the grandparent's house. Maybe it is because I use to love the house my grandparent's had when I was a kid, but I think from a child's perspective this could be extremely interesting. I think the senses and imagery you could use in this story would be plentiful. What does it smell like? How does it make you feel? Where is it? I really like where you could go with this, and I think it would be and easy one to show not tell!

Great ideas though and good luck!

  4. I like number two, its always really awkward to run into exs as is, especially when your with someone new. Pretty much everyone has experienced that and could understand the awkwardness, but I don't know how much you could write on that..

  5. My favorite is number three, about a grandmother's house, because I think it's so interesting to look back on times and events that were just so full of innocence.

  6. #4 sounds really cool, especially if written from a child's frame of mind. It could be a really raw and honest stream of consciousness-type story. The vocabulary and structure used in a story like that could be totally off-the-wall and give you a lot of freedom when deciding what to do. It would be a great read!

  7. I think the first oen lends itself best to the way that short stories are supposed to be developed. It ties in with Hemingway's "Iceberg" technique- a lot of things about the two characters relationship would have to be subtly inferred. However, I think that's what makes it such a cool idea. You would have to develop an entire story within the context of a single night or conversation. It definitely has a ton of potential though!
