By day I smile.
The moments pass
And I'm happy.
Content.
I can ignore
The emptiness
That resides
In my chest.
The days drift past
With ease.
But by night,
I can't
Escape you.
The phantom
Of your memory
Haunts
My
Subconscious.
I see you.
Sometimes,
You're with her.
Others,
You're still mine.
Each scenario
Wakes me
With the bitter taste
Of adversity
On my tongue.
I don't want you.
Need you.
Know you.
You are nothing
But a fraud.
However,
When I close my eyes,
The apparition
Of what was
Torments me.
You are
My
Demon.
Heather,
ReplyDeleteThis is my favorite out of the poems you have posted so far. I love the whole concept of the poem and how controlled your words are. My favorite part is
"Each scenario
Wakes me
With the bitter taste
Of adversity
On my tongue."
I love the use of metaphor and imagery in these lines.
I do however, doubt that the poet narrative is really happy during the day when the poem says "I can ignore the emptiness". I may rephrase this part of the poem to stress how the phantom memory really comes at night. I would also delete the word "however" in your last stanza. I think it is more powerful starting with your second line.
Possibly it is just that I find this poem so relatable, but I really really enjoyed it. Thanks for sharing it!
